Our story

1972.

It was a year of great uncertainty as economic turmoil and gas rationing prevailed throughout the country, but Bud and June Hodge had the vision and courage to start a new business – an institutional equipment firm serving an unfulfilled need for quality products and top notch service in the marketplace. Markets ranged from public and private k-12 schools to colleges, universities, hospitals, parks, recreation centers, and churches. Additional customers came from military bases, research labs, and other federal government facilities.  To this day 40+ yrs later, H.E. Hodge Company, under Jeff Hodge, continues to furnish these fields of learning, athletics, medicine, and so many more with the highest quality products from bleachers to wood science casework to an entire school of furniture.
A company could not survive so many years without the unwavering  commitment to servicing products and customer needs with integrity and excellence. H.E. Hodge Company specializes in bringing value to it’s clients by consulting at the beginning of every project to determine client needs, goals, and functions. From there we take the project all the way through engineered drawings, field measurements, site coordination, installation, and demonstrations. In short, we provide a turn-key package to make sure our customers get to do what they do best!

June Hodge

Born in South Dakota and a product of 14 different schools due to her father’s job transfers around the country, June attended college at the University of California Berkeley in the early  50’s. Bud and June married over Christmas break in December of 1955. After Bud’s service in the Korean War,  June finished school at the University of Nevada in Reno on the GI Bill.

Their first son, Michael,  was born in Nevada before the family moved to California where their second and third sons, Gregory and Jeffrey, were born.  As an employee of Brunswick Corporation, Bud and the family were transferred to Sandy Springs (Atlanta), Georgia in 1966.  In 1972, June teamed up with Bud to start H. E. Hodge Company, Inc. in the basement of their home where they developed a niche in the School Equipment business as a dealer for Brunswick, List Industries, and Aalco Manufacturing Company at that time. June managed financials and office operations for over 30 years before retiring from day-to-day involvement in the business.

June’s hobbies today include reading, day dates with Bud, and volunteer activities with AOII sorority, Atlanta Panhellenic, Rabun Gap Nacoochee Guild, and Country Club of The South Charity Guild.  

Fun Fact:  Along with six other girls, June was on the FIRST team of Girl Cheerleaders at Berkeley in 1954!!!!!

A circuitous route brought Bud and his wife, June, to Georgia where they started H.E. Hodge Company in 1972. Bud graduated from the University of Nevada (Reno) in 1958 after 4 years in the Navy during the Korean War. His degree in Agricultural Economics was a far cry from the institutional equipment industry in which he has now worked for more than 40 years.

After graduation, Bud joined Carnation Co. in the fresh milk and Ice cream division.  It wasn’t until he began selling ice cream and milk to schools for the school lunch program that he found his way into schools.  In 1961, the Brunswick Corporation hired Bud away from Carnation and placed him in the  School Equipment Division to represent the company in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties in Southern California.  A few years later in 1965 he was promoted to Atlanta as a regional manager responsible for developing the southeast dealer organization.  After declining a promotion to National Sales Manager that would have required a move to Kalamazoo, Michigan, Bud and June decided to launch H.E. Hodge Co. from their Georgia home in 1972.

Since then the company has grown from its humble roots, now representing major companies in all aspects of the the institutional equipment industry – from furniture, casework, and athletic equipment to bleachers, handicap lifts, and many other sectors. Bud still works every day with his son Jeff, who now leads the company as President, and feels secure in the knowledge that H.E. Hodge Co. is in good and capable hands.

Bud’s  hobbies today include: golf, travel, exercise, reading, and day dates with June.

Jeff Hodge has been involved with H.E. Hodge Company since it was founded in 1972 by his parents, Bud and June. From unloading trucks to helping with countless installations in the early years, Jeff learned all aspects of the business before settling into sales and management after college. He truly grew up in the family business!

Jeff graduated from Florida State University with a B.A. in Real Estate and studied law school at Georgia State University. Jeff maintained a part-time sales position for H.E. Hodge Company while in law school before deciding it was time to pursue the business full time in 1984. Soon after, Jeff married his wife Donilyn in 1987 and brought in a new member to the family business. Jeff now leads the company as President and works to continue the family legacy while serving clients and manufacturing partners alike with a continued dedication to integrity, service, and innovation.

While business is certainly of prime importance in his life, it is his relationship with Jesus Christ and his three children that give him the greatest joy. Today, Jeff enjoys cheering on the FSU Seminoles and UGA Bulldawgs! As empty nesters, Jeff and Donilyn enjoy spending their free time with friends and family at their home on Lake Lanier.
